The Gospel

Probably no passage of scripture better summarizes what the gospel is than the well-known John 3:16: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Ages ago, God created our first parents, Adam and Eve. He placed them in a wonderful garden and told them to serve, love and obey him. He told them that the result of disobedience would be death. However, they rebelled against him.

God’s response to that rebellion was not what you would expect. Rather than forsake his creation, God promised a Saviour. This Saviour came in the person of his own Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. God loved the world so much that he gave his own Son to be its Saviour.

Christ bore the wrath of God against the sin of the whole human race to the cross. There Christ died for men, women and children. If you repent of your sin and believe in him, if you turn to Christ in faith and in love, God will forgive you all your sins. You will not perish under the wrath of God against sinful and rebellious people. Rather, God will bless you with eternal life. That’s the gospel. That’s the good news.
