We believe that God exists eternally in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is a mystery that transcends human understanding. We know this only because God has revealed it to us in his word.
God reveals his glory and power in creation. As Psalm 19 says, “The heavens are telling the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” He has revealed himself more clearly and precisely in his holy and divine word, the Bible.
In the beginning, God created man and woman, our first parents, Adam and Eve. He gave them a wonderful place to live, the Garden of Eden. He told them to serve him in obedience. He also said that the cost of sin would be their death. Sadly, they sinned and rebelled against him. But God is so good and kind. He responded to their sin by promising them a Saviour, his own Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Old Testament period is a long stretch of time that led up to the coming of God’s own Son. When the time in the plan of God was right, God sent his Son. He was born of a woman, the virgin Mary.
Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit and not by the usual way that babies are conceived. This is not because there is anything wrong with sexual relations between husband and wife. Such relations are part of God’s good creation and are, therefore, good. Rather, God broke into the human race and the endless cycle of sin by doing something new. The holy conception of Christ was a new work by God. He was, in a sense, rewinding history and starting all over again.
Jesus Christ perfectly united the human race to God. He remained God but became a man. This is another mystery that we’d never know had it not been revealed to us in the Bible.
Jesus lived for about 33 years. His life ended when he died on a cross. He died as the victim of a plot against his life, but there was much more involved. God was involved. The death of Jesus was according to the plan of God. Christ took upon himself the responsibility for sin. When believers look to him in faith, their sins are washed away by the death of Christ.
Jesus died and was buried, but on Easter Sunday he rose again! Today he lives! He ascended to heaven, and from heaven he sent the Holy Spirit to earth to work faith in people and the desire to serve God in obedience.
Some time in the future, Jesus will return and will assemble around him all those who loved and served him. They will live with him, the Father and the Holy Spirit, in perfection forever. Something to look forward to!
Since the time of the early church, we have confessed our faith by way of this brief creed which, in twelve statements, summarizes what all Christians believe:
1. I believe in God the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
2. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only-begotten Son, our Lord;
3. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary;
4. suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell.
5. On the third day He arose from the dead;
6. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
7. from there He will come to judge the living and the dead.
8. I believe in the Holy Spirit;
9. I believe a holy catholic Christian church, the communion of saints;
10. the forgiveness of sins;
11. the resurrection of the body;
12. and the life everlasting.
